Eureka Maru Is the name of a solo starship that was part of the Andromeda series by Gene Roddenberry. Maru was the most eager puppy in the litter to learn and do things early. He had, and still has, the largest feet for a Dachshund...they were constantly tripping him up as a baby. Which earned him the nickname of the Big Goof! Maru had difficulty with his conformation championship because, in typical stubborn Dachshund nature, the boy HAS an attitude about being told where to stand and how to stand. However, his good looks did win out before he was 2 years of age.
Maru went to live with Rod and Nancy Barclay at 12 weeks of age. Rod handled him earning his Field Championship with 3 first place wins!! Bored with Field Trials, he and Rod moved on to different things. Rod trained and campaigned him in agility during and after he earned his conformation championship. In between agility trials, Rod was able to put the JE on him and though Earthdog trials are few and far between, he is competing at the Senior level. Now, Rod and Maru are training for their Tracking Dog title. Concurrently while training for all these other events, Nancy is also training him in Obedience and Rally.
A non-dachshund owner might think these dogs are overworked... However, one only needs to hear them demanding to be the one to be working and learning, to do something/anything, at any given point in the day or vocalizing because the other kid(s) are being worked and they have to bide their time until it is their turn to know these dogs LOVE to learn.
